Net metering is an electrical billing mechanism that enables grid-connected rooftop solar owners to export surplus daytime electricity to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) distribution grid and offset their regular consumption.

During daylight hours, solar panels installed on your roof generate direct current energy, which your inverter converts into alternating current for powering domestic appliances or commercial equipment. When your solar installation produces more electricity than your premises currently consume, the excess energy flows smoothly back into the local KSEB grid through a bidirectional energy meter installed by utility officials.

The bidirectional net meter operates continuously in both directions. It tracks the units of electricity you draw from the utility during evening hours or rainy periods, as well as the surplus units your solar panels export during bright sunny hours. At the end of each bimonthly billing cycle, KSEB calculates your net billable consumption by deducting the exported electricity from your total imported units. If your generation exceeds total consumption, the extra banked units carry forward to reduce upcoming energy bills.

To establish net metering in Kerala, homeowners and businesses complete a formal registration through the official KSEB portal. Once feasibility clearance is granted, electrical inspectors verify the installation, including earth pits, safety isolators, and lightning surge protection. After clearance, the utility synchronizes the bidirectional meter with the distribution transformer.

With net metering, rooftop solar systems operate without expensive battery banks while maintaining uninterrupted grid reliability. Proper maintenance, seasonal cleaning, and regular inspection ensure your solar panels export clean electricity reliably year-round across Kerala.
